Enhancing Nurse Professional Development: Programs for IENs

CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) offers a variety of professional development programs to IENs: Registration and employment preparation, clinical skill updates, and mentorship. Our new Workplace Integration Program (WIP) for IENs​ focuses on workplace diversity, cultural competence, and supports IENs during their orientation with a transition plan focusing on how to build a relational practice with colleagues, patients, and families. It encourages IENs to provide leadership and to manage conflicts in the workplace. Important modules on language and communication examine real and perceived barriers, offering pointers on information exchange, health teaching, documentation, and correspondence.

We also extend the WIP to all healthcare and related organizations, offering practical strategies to act as a guide for innovation and sustainability. WIP supports efforts to Recruit, Integrate & Retain IENs by enabling employers to facilitate a smooth transition and successful integration of IENs into their workforce, empowering IENs to succeed and excel in the workplace. The WIP for Employers includes cross-cultural customized recruitment, examines why a diverse workplace matters and minimizes bias in the hiring process. Instructions on the benefits of workforce diversity and inclusion, and how to support IENs’ integration through cultural understanding, in healthcare teams and administration are also offered.
