Do You Have Sensitive Skin? Are You Allergic to Certain Types of Metals That Prevent You From Wearing Jewelry?

Some of our patients have a common skin irritation to non-precious-metal jewelry that causes itching, swelling, and irritation to their skin. Did you know that if you have skin allergies that you could also be sensitive to the metals used in dental restorations like those found in metal base crowns?

What Would My Gums Look Like if I Had a Metal Allergy?

The tissues around the metal crown will appear puffy, red and irritated along the margins of the crown.Although this is also what gingivitis looks like, the difference is that an allergy will present symptoms like this when you have excellent oral hygiene. Other symptoms may include an itchy feeling or as it is burning. Sometimes the tissue appears purplish and has a rolled appearance.

Some of the crowns used in dentistry today are porcelain fused to metal crowns. These crowns are made up of a metal base that goes over the tooth, covered by porcelain. Although it is covered there is still a small amount of metal that is visible along the outer margin of the crown that comes into contact with your gum tissue. This metal base is usually a mixture in a range from high gold to no gold and may have the same materials used in jewelry that causes an allergic reaction. If you know that you have an allergy to certain types of metal in jewelry, then you can also have an allergy to your metal crown. Since the crown is bonded permanently onto your tooth, it will be a constant irritation that you won’t be able to relieve. It may cause gum problems and bone loss.

At Belle Forest Dental we use metal free restorative options to restore your tooth or replace existing metal crowns. The materials are very durable, while also improving the aesthetic appearance of your tooth.
